Over 200 Job Seekers, a Violinist, and a Few Models Make SCSF “Hiring Affair” an Affair to Remember
On May 10th, Success Center SF hosted their annual job fair — this year christened as the “Hiring Affair.” The four-hour hiring event, at their Western Addition Career Center (1449 Webster Street) location in San Francisco’s Western Addition area, gave job seekers an opportunity to get up close and personal with dozens of Bay Area employers eager to find new employee talent.
In all, over 200 job seekers and 51 employers were in attendance at the courtyard event — one of the few (and maybe only) San Francisco job fairs held outdoors. As always, there was an intriguing mix of industries, representing everything from the healthcare field to hospitality, civil service, retail, and more.
Some of the City’s Most Prominent Employers Were Here
Among some employers participating for the first time at the event were Ford GoBike, manufacturers of innovative e-bikes, and local restaurants Chart House and Coletta Gelato. Macy’s, who was at the job fair for the 2nd year in a row, appreciated the long-term working relationship they’ve had with the Career Center. A few employers, like Safeway and Culinary Staffing of America even did partial interviews/screenings and hires on the spot. Career Center Interim Director Patricia Tu says, “And at least another ten job fair attendees got job offers within a week of the event.” Among those companies that made immediate hires were: restaurants Bubba Gump Shrimp and Chart House and new restaurant Lemonade which had 3 hires that day alone.
Other notables include UC Berkeley, who was there promoting their over 3000 openings they currently have available, while the San Francisco Police Department was there hoping to fill some of the over 200 positions they expect to have over the next few years. Meanwhile, Doubletree Hotels, Applebee’s, Smitten Ice Cream, and Home Depot were also on hand, all hiring for various positions throughout the city and Bay Area.
Some of the comments we received from employers were:
“This was a well-organized event.”- UCSF
“Huge crowd, great location and staff was extremely helpful.” – Admiral Security Services
“Great energy, constant flow of candidates with a variety of employers.” – Manpower Government Solutions
“A lot of opportunities with a unique way for youth to access them.” – Chalk/BACR
Job Seekers Came from Across the Bay Area
Job seekers from across the Bay Area were represented at the hiring event. As usual, the majority of job fair participants came from the Career Center area with over 20% of attendees identified as Western Addition residents. But the rest came from across the city and further with some coming from as far away as Antioch, San Leandro, Richmond, Palo Alto and Vallejo. Isaac, a Career Center client, said “he’d had great dialogue” while another Career Center’s Samantha gave a shout out to the Career Center for helping her get her first job.
Job fairs like this one remain vitally important to the Bay Area community, particularly areas like the Western Addition and others still plagued by low employment numbers. Though overall employment levels remain at record highs throughout San Francisco, some populations, particularly African American job seekers, are still unemployed / underemployed at disproportionate levels when compared to other ethnic and gender groups. And the Bay Area’s problematic income disparity combined with the area’s housing crunch means that it’s more important than ever to not settle for just “a job” but to obtain meaningful, sustainable employment with opportunities for career advancement and economic growth.
Fashion Shows, Raffles and More: A Job Fair Not Quite Like Any Other
To liven things up, the Career Center event also featured few things you don’t normally see at job fairs including: a raffle of free clothing appropriate for work, as well as other prizes a jobseeker can use; Hip-Hop violinist Kippy Marks provided entertainment, and a fashion show of stylish clothes for work. The fashion show featured actual job applicants wearing suits and other professional apparel from Stitch Fix and other generous donors.
Looking for Work? The Career Center’s The Place to Be
The job fair may be over, but the Western Addition Career Center still has you covered with an abundance of job listings from local employers, along with a state-of-the-art computer lab, fax services, and other professional development services – all offered at no cost to users (that means “you”) every Monday through Friday (except holidays).
